This is a very traditional kerala style dish. The roasted coconut along with cooked shallots and tamarind juice adds in a great flavour to it.
Recipe
Ingredients
Shallots -25-30
Coconut grated 1 cup
Coriander seeds /powder 2 tbsp
Dry red chilly -10 or red chilly powder-1 tbsp
Small lemon sized tamarind (Valan puli) -soaked in water
Handful curry leaves
Green chilly/small ginger (optional)
Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
Mustard seeds- 1tsp
Water
Salt as per needed
oil ( preferably coconut oil)
.
In a pan, add oil and cook the shallots well until slight golden brown and keep aside.
Take a small lemon sized tamarind soak in water and keep aside.
.
In the same pan, add a bit oil and roast coriander seeds, saute it for 2 min in medium flame, add dry chilly & saute it for a min. Finally add grated coconut and mix well in medium flame. Roast it until slight golden brown and until you get the roasted aroma, stir well. Turn off the flame once roasted and keep aside for cooling down. ( This method can be substituted by spice powders too, check notes below). Initially grind it without water so that it gets a good consistency , later on add 1/2 cup of water and grind it to a very smooth paste.
.
In a pan/kadhai, add oil splutter mustard seeds, curry leaves. Add the cooked onions and grinded paste, mix well. Add the tamarind juice( squeeze well the pulp with water). Add little more water, cook for 5 minutes. Turn off the flame. .
Notes
.
*You can also add slited green chilly and small sized ginger while cooking shallots in the beginning if you wish.
*After spluttering mustard seeds, 2 dry chilly( if you want it bit more spicy)
*Coriander seeds and dry chilly can also be substituted by spice powders- Method- skip adding seeds at first for roasting instead roast the grated coconut first, once slight brown add 2tbsp coriander powder and 1tbsp chilly powder, atlast turmeric powder.( All in medium flame)

Enjoy!
